Who Made Christianity Complicated?

Who made Christianity so complicated? One word, people. People complicated our relationship with God because Faith became performance-based and not relationship-based. In Exodus chapter 20, God uses Moses to present the Israelites, His chosen people, the 10 Commandments.

The Ten Commandments

20 And God spoke all these words:

2 "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

3 "You shall have no other gods before[a] me.

4 "You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

7 "You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

8 "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

12 "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

13 "You shall not murder.

14 "You shall not commit adultery.

15 "You shall not steal.

16 "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."  Exodus 20:1-17

The term "commandment" is defined as commands or mandates, in which God wanted His people to abide. The first four of the ten commandments,  focused on how we should honor and worship God.  The remaining six of the commandments concentrate on how we should treat others.

Over time, the 10 Commandments morphed into 631 laws. The laws became so granular, that the original Commandments became lost, and people began abiding by the rules more than the commandments.

Some may argue that this is an example of what religion has become. Religion at the root was initially intended to help enhance an individual's faith. The problems began when there was a shift from upholding God's Commandments to fulfilling the rules set forth by religious leaders.

The change caused division and confusion, which lead to practices that are contrary to God. This is how idolizing spiritual practices can impede our ability to experience God truly. Part of the reason God sent his Son Jesus was to point people back to God's law.

Jesus Teaches the Great Commandment(s)

During his earthly ministry, Jesus teaches us two commandments that encompasses all 10 Commandments and are one of the few teachings featured in all four gospels.

34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"

37 Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' [a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' [b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." Matthew 22:34-40

The first commandment that Jesus gave " that you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and all your mind, this is the great commandment." encompasses or condenses the first four commandments, which focuses on our relationship with God.

The second commandment, " love your neighbor as yourself," condensed the last six Commandments, which highlights how we should treat others.

The Truth: Trying to Being like Jesus is Difficult

In the end, trying to be like Jesus is hard because He was perfect, and we are not! As Christian, we have to deny our instincts and desires to follow and trust God to the fullest, but I submit to you it is not as complicated as we make it.

God wants your heart, your soul, and your mind (in that order). His love for you is not predicated on performance, but your heart.

How to Overcome the Complexities of Christianity

Is Christianity Complicated?

Christianity is not that complicated once you recognize the flawed source that made it complicated, to begin with, people. Our fallen nature complicates Christianity so much so that we make it almost impossible for people to want to be like Jesus.

Once we confess our wrongdoing and turn from our performance-driven desires to uphold the law, we can freely and openly accept the gift of salvation in the way that God has always intended for it to be.

Ultimately, the One way to simplify Christianity is to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior with your heart, soul, and mind.
